What research says about money and choosing a career
- Money matters, with diminishing returns. For most people, happiness keeps rising with income, but each raise matters less than the last. For the least happy people, more money stopped helping above roughly $100k (Killingsworth, Kahneman & Mellers, 2023).
- Pay grows with experience. Compare "starting out" with "established" pay in each career. Many jobs pay far more after 10–15 years.
- The median is the middle, not a promise. Half of full-time workers earn more and half earn less. Where you land depends on skill, location, employer, and effort.
- Watch the debt. A common rule, used by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, is to borrow no more in total than you expect to earn in your first year. That keeps loan payments near 10% of income on a standard 10-year plan.
- Being your own boss pays differently. On average, self-employed people earn less than employees doing similar work, especially early on (Hamilton, 2000). They also tend to be more satisfied with their work, mostly because of the independence (Benz & Frey, 2008).

The honest facts about starting something, and about AI
- Most new businesses are a long game. About 1 in 5 new businesses close in their first year, and about half are still open after five years (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
- Experience is an advantage. The average founder of the fastest-growing U.S. startups is about 45, and experience in the same industry strongly predicts success (Azoulay, Jones, Kim & Miranda, 2020). Getting great at something first is a real strategy.
- The entrepreneurial streak can be built. People who start ventures tend to be driven, open to new ideas, organized, emotionally steady, and comfortable with risk (Zhao, Seibert & Lumpkin, 2010). All of these grow with practice.
- You can test it now. Sell something, run a small service, launch a project for a club, or join DECA, FBLA, or Junior Achievement.
- AI is reshaping work unevenly. The World Economic Forum expects AI and big-data specialists to be among the fastest-growing jobs through 2030. Anthropic's 2026 study found no broad rise in unemployment in AI-exposed jobs so far, though hiring of young workers into the most exposed jobs slowed a little. Skills that pair well with AI, like judgment, hands-on work, and working with people, are a good bet.

- Talk to someone who does it. A 15-minute chat or a day of job shadowing tells you more than any quiz. Ask what a normal Tuesday looks like.
- Test it in real life. Try a class, club, summer program, volunteer gig, or part-time job connected to your hottest area.
- Keep options open. Choose high-school classes, like math and writing, that keep many hot paths possible.

How the heat map works
No quiz can tell you who to be. This one organizes what you already know about yourself and lines it up with detailed ratings of real jobs, so you can see which directions are worth exploring first.
What we measure, and why
Career research keeps pointing to the same idea, person–environment fit: people do better and feel more satisfied when who they are matches what their work involves. The questionnaire measures the five kinds of fit that research supports best.

Interests carry the most weight. They're the strongest single predictor of career choice, and studies find that when interests match the work, people perform better and are more satisfied. Strengths come next, because in the Theory of Work Adjustment, success depends on your abilities meeting the job's demands, and satisfaction depends on the job meeting your values. Personality and work setting fine-tune the result. Dealbreakers and your education plans act as gentle multipliers.
How a square gets its heat
- Interest fit combines (a) how strongly your six Holland scores correlate with the career's, (b) how much you like the types it's highest in, and (c) how much you enjoy the specific interest areas the career centers on.
- Strength fit asks two things: does the career's biggest demand fall on your strengths, and does it use what you're best at? Big demands in areas you rated weak lower the score a little. Skills grow, so the penalty stays small.
- Values, personality, and setting compare what matters to you (relative to your own average, so rating everything high doesn't wash out the result) with what the career tends to offer.
- The five fits are averaged using the weights you can adjust. Then dealbreakers and education plans apply their multipliers.
- Every career's score is compared with all the others. The brightest squares are your standouts, roughly the top few percent, and black squares are your weakest fits.
Majors are scored from the careers they lead to, using the official CIP-to-SOC crosswalk. A major is hot when its best-fitting careers are hot.
Pay and your lifestyle
Pay numbers come from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2024 American Community Survey microdata: what full-time, year-round workers in each occupation actually earned, adjusted to today's dollars with the Consumer Price Index. Unlike employer surveys, it includes self-employed people, which lets us show how many people in each career are their own boss and what they earn. For each career you'll see the typical (median) pay, the range most people earn, pay for people just starting out (ages 22–29) versus established workers (ages 35–54), and the share who are self-employed.
Your lifestyle goal starts from the MIT Living Wage Calculator's typical costs for a lower-cost state (Mississippi), a mid-cost state (Ohio), or an expensive metro (San Francisco), for the household you picture. A "getting by" budget covers basic needs. "Comfortable" doubles it, following the 50/30/20 rule (half of take-home pay for needs, 30% for wants, 20% for savings), and "well-off" triples it. Owning a home or driving a new car raises housing and transportation costs.
The pay part of a career's score blends two things: how much its established workers earn compared with your goal, and what share of its workers earn at least that much. How much pay counts depends on your answers. If you'd take the job you love over a better-paying one, pay counts less.
Majors show what graduates actually earn one and four years after finishing, plus typical student debt, from the U.S. Department of Education's College Scorecard. That data comes from federal tax and student-loan records.
Your own path: entrepreneurship, new industries, and AI
Fourteen questions measure an entrepreneurial streak across six parts that research links to starting ventures: drive to build something, spotting opportunities, making things happen, comfort with uncertainty, bouncing back, and rallying people and resources. Related personality answers, like initiative and tolerance for ambiguity, feed in too. A strong streak boosts careers where many people are self-employed and "build your own" paths like founding a startup, a trades business, or a creative studio. A preference for stability cools those a little.
The map also includes 28 careers O*NET doesn't list separately yet, such as AI/machine-learning engineer, AI product manager, data engineer, EV technician, drone pilot, chip engineer, quantum computing scientist, content creator, and startup founder. Each borrows its ratings from the closest established occupations (a founder, for example, blends chief executives, operations managers, marketing managers, and software developers) and is then adjusted where the job is truly different. Their pay is marked as an estimate.
Each career's AI number comes from the Anthropic Economic Index (March 2026): roughly how much of the job's work people are already doing or speeding up with AI, weighted by how much time the tasks take. It describes what's happening today, not a prediction that the job will disappear. If you said you'd rather avoid AI-disrupted work, high-AI careers cool slightly. If you want to build AI, AI-building careers warm up.
The map's four directions
The map uses the World-of-Work Map developed by career researchers at ACT, based on Dale Prediger's finding that two dimensions sit underneath Holland's six interest types: Data ↔ Ideas and People ↔ Things. Each career's position comes from its own interest profile, so careers that involve similar kinds of work sit together. The map is laid out so every career gets its own square.
Keep in mind
- Your answers are a snapshot. Interests are still developing in high school and become much more stable by the early twenties, so retake this yearly.
- Self-ratings of ability are rough. Grades, teacher feedback, and trying things out are better evidence.
- Pay is national. Local pay can be much higher or lower, so check local numbers on My Next Move or the Bureau of Labor Statistics Occupational Outlook Handbook. As a check, for common jobs our Census-based medians usually land within about 10–15% of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' May 2025 employer wage survey. They run higher for jobs with many part-timers, since we count only full-time, year-round workers, and somewhat lower for a few careers, like nursing and management, where people report their own earnings differently.
- New and "build your own" careers don't have their own government data yet, so their ratings and pay are informed estimates.
- A cold square isn't a “no.” If something you care about shows up cold, look at why in the details. It may be one or two answers pulling it down.
